As part of family support for our loved one with mental illness I spend time with them on a regular basis. A Saturday lunch out and then a walk or a short visit to a community event or venue has become a favorite time to spend together. I am able to assess out how they are doing and if there is something they need family help with on a regular basis, but more importantly to connect with them as a person and not as someone with an illness. Routine is very important to many people with mental illness and this is a situation where PLAN has been very helpful. We will be going on vacation soon and the PLAN staff can continue this routine for us when we are out of town. Knowing our loved one has a Saturday outing to look forward and will be touching bases with someone who can see how they doing gives us peace of mind and allows us to have a more restful vacation.
